HAPPY ST PADRAIG'S DAY 17TH MARCH 2008
I run a portfolio of research sites, for use by researchers (both academic and technical). Originally I ran web-sites to chronicle and investigate the research into deafened people and their interaction with digital technology such as television. Now that this research is completed, this site will continue to give details of the research project and a good list of related hearing impaired links. The other sites will provice research resources into various aspects of usability not only those concerned with hearing impairment.
Interactive Television usability content will in the New Year be moving to http://www.tvusability.org.uk/ (now online). This is a television usability research site.
The other sites (e.g. www.deaf-research.co.uk www.deafenedproject.org ) record data from my research project and www.deaf-research.org.uk has been re-designed to become a major resource site for researchers in the field of hearing impairment and human computer interaction. A new usability research resource site has been launched (December 2006) : http://www.usability-research.org.uk (now online, with a welcome page). .
http://www.tvresearch.org.uk is now online www.tvresearch.co.uk will be an archive site and will be online soon.
I run a specialist IT Accessibility consultancy and I also conduct academic research into Usability Issues. Please note that i am severely dyslexic so apologies for any unusual spelling!!!
Deafened People and iTV research (this site)
The emphasis of this site is more on the semiotical/communication theory area rather than the medical or technical aspects of the subject. The deafened are those who suffer aural sensory loss (deafness) either partially or profound in adult life. Some of my research however will also be of use to those born deaf.
The UK, in common with many countries has an ageing population. This has been caused by two main factors, the failing birth rate and longer life expectancy owing to advances in both medicine and qualityof life. One consequence seem to be that more people are experiencing some form of deafeness. The RNID estimates that 1 in 7 adults are affected by some form of deafness.
I was awarded the 2003 ROCC/John McGregor Temple Memorial Prize for best IT project. I have recently been awarded an MPhil research degree for my work with deafened people and digital television
Being presented with the award in July 2003.
